Brunching is big in Bangkok. All five-star hotels
and respectable cafes do them. Your problem will be to choose one that
fits your wants and needs. While some are kid-friendly, others are
strictly adult. You can get tipsy at some, while others concentrate on
music. Are you curing a hangover ? Do you need to eat al fresco ? What
they all have in common is an overpowering of global delicacies. Here
are list Bangkok's best.
The deluxe affair at The Four Seasons is the city's
most expensive (B 2,150++), but also the most lavish. Expect
free-flowing bubbly and huge martinis, a foie gras corner in their
courtyard and a roe station in the pool. Wander into a restaurant
kitchen to ogle beautifully arranged raw steaks, chops and seafood,
choose and have it delivered to your table. Thanks to an ingenious
system, you don't have to carry those heavy plates yourself. Splash out.
Sunday Bossa & Bubbly Brunch (B 1,550++ incl one
glass of champagne) at Trader Vic's is a more relaxed affair, thanks to
the Polynesian outfitting . The food is terrific, but this brunch is
known for its hefty, freeflow Mai Tais (plus beer & wine) - hardly
anybody leaves here on steady legs. The most coveted table are the ones
on the terrace. overlooking the Chao Phraya and the resort's impressive
gardens.
Jazz fans flocking to The Living Room's Jazzy Brunch
(B 1,275++) make this affair one of the most popular in town. The comfy
sofas, the free-flowing wine and the cool live soundtrack will almost
keep you seated, were it not for one of the biggest brunch spreads in
town. The dessert area is a favorite. Book ahead
Traveling with kids ? Bring them along to etc's
Family Brunch (B 750++ , kids half price, under 6 free). Activities like
pizza baking, junior bartending and face painting will keep your bouncy
offspring busy and yourself sane and happy. A separate kids' buffet
offers lots of junior favourites.
If you don't think you can make it out of bed by
noon, consider the Chocolate Buffet, at the Sukhothai Hotel (B 750++).
Amid the refined interior, each Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the rich
scent of chocolate wafts through the main building. A mindboggling
selection of frozen, melted and baked choc is served between 2pm-6pm.
And since once can eat only so much cocoa, a savoury buffet leaves nothing to wish for.
Kuppa has got to be best brunch option outside
of hotels. Although it doesn't have a special brunch menu, its lively
atmosphere mixing families and hipsters, cool music and excellent bistro
food has them storming the place each Sunday. Come here with your other
half, order some eggs benedict, a sandwich, don't forget the bubbly.
Crepes & Co is a lovely low-key affair to
lounge away Sunday afternoons. The low, Arabic stle tables in the
verdant garden are perfect in the cool winter season so they're
ferociously fought over on weekends. Try a mutiple-choice brunch set (B
turn the brunch ito a tropical picnic.
The usual times for brunches are 11.30 am - 3 pm.
Reservations are a must - some buffets are booked out weeks in advance.
