100 Tonson Gallery

100 Soi Tonson, Ploen Chit Rd, / BTS Chit Lom / Tel 02 6841527 /  www.100tonsongallery.com
Located in a swanky private residence, this trendy gallery attracts some of the country's most ambitious artists who love to transform the whole gallery environment. The high profile exhibitions stir media attention, with big name international artists occasionally displaying their work as well.

Akko Collectors House

919/1 Sukhumvit Rd.(btw Soi 49 & 51) /
BTS Thong Lo / Tel 02 2591436 /
http://akkoartgallery.tripod.com/Bangkok
Run by Japanese dealer Atsuko, this gallery is located near Sukhumvit's Japanese enclave, and has a definite Nipponesque flavour to much of its art. The two-floor commercial gallery tries to please with anything from historic Japanese woodblock prints to Thai water-colourists.

Bangkok University Art Gallery

Building 9, 3rd Fl, Lkuaynam Thai Campus, Rama IV Rd. / Tel 02 3503500
Located a little way out near the port, this small campus gallery focuses on young emerging, as well as local established artists, who display more experimental multidisciplinary art. Worth the haul, depending on the show.

Chulalongkorn Art Centre

Centre of Academic Resources Bldg, 7th Fl, Chulalongkorn University, Phayathai Rd./BTS Siam / Tel 02 2182965
This large open gallery space on the top floor of the prolific university's resource building draws some of the country's most cutting-edge artists, as well as thematic group exhibitions by local and international artists. In the heart of downtown, a trip here can be combined with Jamjuree Gallery on the same campus.

Gallery 55

8th Fl, Alma Linnk Bldg, 25 Soi Chit Lom / Tel 02 6656277 / www.gallery55s.com
Owner Ferdie H Ju has pretty much switched all focus away from Thai art these days, preferring to exhibit contemprary Chinese and Vietnamese artists, with the occasional non-Asian show. Agreeable works usually attract a lot of interest with prices reflecting the plush commercial location.

Gallery F-Stop

Tamarind Cafe, Sukhumvit Soi 20 (300 m on left) / BTS Asok, MRT Sukhumvit / Tel 02 6637421
www.galleryfstop.com
Vegetarians have long discovered the merits of the elegant Tamarind Cafe that includes regular monthly rotating photography displays in its exhibition space Gallery F-Stop. The gallery was the city's first forum devoted solely to photographic art.

H Gallery

201 Soi 12 Sathorn Rd / BTS Surasak
Tel 01 3104428 / www.hgallerybkk.com
Run by astute American Ernest H Lee, this pleasant two-floor gallery is located in an old converted wooden school building, leaning towards an exciting young stable of commercially viable artists. The gallery, one of the best known in Bangkok, has recently begun exhibiting Thai artists in NYC.

Jamjuree Gallery

Jamjuree Building 8, Chulalongkorn University, Phayathai Rd. / BTS Siam / Tel 02 2183708/9
Just a stone's throw from shopping at MBK and Siam Sq, Jamjuree's two rooms display both student group shows as well as more experimental exhibits by rising local artists. Worth the short walk for a potential bargain.

Eat Me

1/6 Soi Phi Phat 2, Convent Rd / BTS Saladaeng
Tel 02 2380931
Eat Me is one of the capital's trendiest restaurants with a regular bi-monthly exhibition schedule that is organised by H Gallery. Spread over three compact floors, the hanging space for artwork is tight and diners almost rub shoulders with picture frames, but this only accentuates the appetite for art.

Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand

Maneeya Centre, Penthouse, Chit Lom / BTS Chit Lom / Tel 02 6520580 / www.fccthai.com
This meet-and-drink stop for wandering press has one long wall reserved as a gallery space, with new exhibitions usually opening on the last or first Friday of each month. The work on view often comprises edgy photojournalism captured by foreign lensmen, with the occasional display of two-dimensional paintings and prints by expatriate artists.

Jim Thompson House Art Centre

6 Soi Kasemsan 2, Rama I Rd / BTS National Stadium / Tel 02 2167368 /
www.jimthompson-house.com
A recently opened art centre on the ground of late Thai silk entrepreneur's well-preserved house-museum. The centre is a beautifully designed building that blends traditional architecture with a roomy contemporary gallery upstairs, holding regular exhibitions of prominent local and international art and crafts.

National Gallery

4 Chao Fah Rd. Rattanakosin, Opp National Theater / Tel 02 2820637
With construction of the new Bangkok Metropolitan Art Museum scheduled to start soon, this lacklustre national exhibition space will need to raise the bar to attract visitors. Its permanent collection provides some examples of Thailand's modern art development, with more interesting monthly shows, mainly by senior Thai artists, held in the sizeable annex behind the main building.

Play Gallery

Playground, 2nd Fl, 818 Sukhumvit Soi 55 / BTS Thong Lo / Tel 02 7147888
www.playgroundstore.co.th
Bangkok's hippest new design-oriented retail mall on Thong Lo places strong emphasis on the incorporation of contemporary art exhibitions through its cramped viewing space. The gallery is luring cutting-edge local artists, who seem curiously attracted by the opportunity to show their art in a forum devoted to the capital's nouveau riche.

Queen's Gallery

101 Ratchandamnoen Klang Rd / Tel 02 2815360
www.queengallery.org
One of Bangkok's newer viewing spaces to open, the well-organised five-floor gallery is under Royal patronage and has a busy exhibition schedule of modern and contemporary, predominantly locally produced art.
